US Women’s National Team beat Belgium 6-0 in final April camp match

The women of the United States National Team beat Belgium 6-0 in Sunday night’s final match of the American’s April camp.

Ever changing line-up Improves Team’s Gameplay

Jill Ellis, the team’s head coach, had made several changes to the line up to improve the team’s gameplay. The squad that beat Australia on Thursday had six switched made to the line-up while the positional changes for Crystal Dunn and Julie Ertz saw the Belgian team face a completely different starting formation.

Tough Times for the Red Flames

From the beginning of the game, it was clear to see who the better players were in this match. The Red Flames had a tough time keeping up with the US women’s national team. Just fourteen minutes into the game the US’ starting No.9 Carli Lloyd opened the scoring by sending in an amazing flicked header. Another five minutes after this and she scored another header doubling the US’ lead.

The US team Dominates

Carli Lloyd goal celebrationIt became that much apparent as time went on that the Belgians were no match to the Americans when it came to aerial strength when Lindsey Horan scored another set-piece header and Sam Mewis followed suit a few moments later extending the US’ lead to 4-0.

The second half saw the American team add another fifth goal through the efforts of Alex Morgan who was a worthy opponent to Nicky Evrard, the Belgian team’s goalkeeper.

The final score line of 6-0 came about from Jess McDonald scoring another set-piece header in the second half stoppage time.

Lloyd Shines As Back-up No. 9

Taking into consideration how much the Belgian team, which currently ranks twentieth, was overmatched by the Americans in this contest, it is quite challenging to draw appropriate conclusions. However, what has been clearly apparent is Lloyd’s suitability as the official backup No. 9.

In the two starts that she has featured in, playing against Scotland late last year and in the Belgium match, Lloyd has demonstrated she is arguably the best choice for the position.

Lloyd arguably has the physical characteristics required of a center forward down on lock. In the match against Belgium she demonstrated her capabilities in the air as well as ball control in transition finishing the game with two goals.

No Good Replacement for Ali Krieger

This game also saw Ali Krieger, who has been missing in action for two years, earning her 99th cap. During this time Ellis experimented with different players at right back without finding a suitable replacement for Krieger. The best candidate for the position was Kelley O’Hara, who is often unavailable on account of injury.

Will Krieger Make the 2019 Tournament Squad?

US Women’s National Team beat Belgium 6-0 in final April camp match 1This match did not allow for a true evaluation of Ali Krieger’s current international form seeing as how the Belgium team was largely overmatched in this contest. Although her current defensive ability has not yet been amply tested and evaluated, it is clear that the 2015 World Cup veteran has not yet satisfied Ellis’ defence requirements. However, having spent the last two years looking and unsuccessfully finding an appropriate replacement, it seems like Krieger has a chance of being listed in the 2019 tournament on account of her vast experience as a right back.

The tournament will be held in France.

According to ESPN2 reports, the US team’s World Cup squad will be determined by their match against South Africa that is to be held on the 12th of May.
