Kiwi Company Sky City to Open an Online Casino
Sky City, a casino company based in New Zealand, is currently looking at plans to open an online casino because of what it says is competition from other online casinos. However, this idea is met with some opposition.
About Sky City
Sky City was founded in Auckland in 1996. Currently, the company owns six casinos in Australia and New Zealand. In 2017, the company’s revenue topped $1 billion for the first time. The company is valued at approximately $750 million. Sky City Auckland is New Zealand’s largest casino. It has a large hotel, gaming tables, slot machines, a theater, and a convention center. The company is continually looking to expand.
The Idea of Online Gaming
Sky City has stated it wants to offer online gaming because its customers are already gaming online using offshore operators, and it wants to keep the money inside the Kiwi nation. Officials of the company say Sky City wants to be competitive with other casinos that are online.
Some legislators within the New Zealand government have mentioned that they would like to level the online playing field and allow Sky City to open an online casino to compete with the offshore casinos that are based overseas. These legislators have noted that since the offshore casinos are, in effect, taking money out of New Zealand without paying any taxes, a Sky City casino would keep the money, as well as the tax revenue, in the country.
Social agencies, such as the Problem Gambling Foundation, said it would like to see the country instead explore ways to control those overseas casinos that operate in New Zealand. For example, the foundation said, the government should require them to be licensed in the country before they are allowed to operate. The country could also explore blocking credit cards in New Zealand that people have used to gamble offshore.
The Problem with Online Gaming
Many New Zealanders have criticized the company’s push to establish an online casino, saying the country already has enough online gaming opportunities. They point out that Kiwis can already play the lottery online, as well as engage in sports gaming through an online location. In addition, if Sky City wants to open an online casino, the company has said it will do it with the help of an offshore agency that is already up and running, and the casino would most likely look to buy into an online casino offering. The casino also has not ruled out beginning an online casino on its own at some point, but executives admit Sky City is not yet ready to offer an online product.
In addition, a law would have to be changed in New Zealand. Currently, there is no law that allows for the operation of online gaming. Many legislators have said that the country is already deeply invested in land-based casinos, and they do not want to saturate the market with online casinos, which might take tax money away from the nation.
