Leicestershire started the 2019 Championship season on a high beating Sussex at Hove. Leicestershire chased 230 beating the competition by seven wickets in the Division Two opener.
Leicester Triumphant Against Sussex

Although the captain Paul Horton went out early with Mark Cosgrove (53 not out) and Hasan Azad (59), debuting for the first time in the Championships, saw the game through to victory.
The match figures made by Tom Taylor (10-122) have been described as the main motivating factor in the success of the Foxes in the game against Sussex.
Sussex Suffers Minor Setback
The defeat by Leicestershire has seen Sussex starting the Championship on a disappointing note. Sussex has been a fan favourite from the last season with many anticipating they would be emerging the overall champions in the 2018 season.
This setback has however not been watered down as there is hope that the team will be challenging for the ultimate prize alongside the three teams that have already been promoted in the second tier.
Leicestershire Head Coach Proud Of Team
Paul Nixon, the head coach for Leicestershire, has said that this impressive win against Sussex is a major morale booster for the team’s County Championship campaign. The visitors managed a surprising seven-wicket win on Monday sailing through the 230 runs needed easily.
Nixon used this victory to show that his team has what is required to compete for a promotional place in this year’s Division Two. The Division Two has three promotional places open this year.
At the close of play, the coach had nothing but praise for the squad saying that he is incredibly proud of the team’s performance in that game. He said that the play was excellent from the time Tom Taylor got the wicket with the fourth ball.
A Superb Gameplay Says Coach
Nixon went into details congratulating several players for their outstanding performance during the game. Among the players named was Paul Horton, who was praised for leading from the front. The coach went on to describe Hasan Azad’s gameplay as beautiful and praised Mark Cosgrove for playing like an international cricketer despite having a tough 2018.
The coach went on to say that the calmness with which the players carried themselves during the game was so pleased that they looked like a completely different outfit. He added that with so many positives going for them, the team was completely confident they would win the game.
“It will give us enormous confidence. Man-for-man, I believe we are as good as any team in Division Two and no county has worked harder this winter. We’re in a good place. It’s a long season, but we’ve made a really positive start.”
Sussex’s Coach Registers Different Sentiments
Jason Gillespie, Sussex’s head coach, cut a different picture saying that his team’s performance was disappointing. He said that although the team tried to hang in there, having had a 38 for 5 in the first game and a 4 for 21 defeats on the third morning, made it hard to come back on top.
Gillespie stated that had his team gotten more runs they would have made the game a bit more challenging but congratulated the winning team for a job well done.
The coach pointed out two incidents when the players lost wickets in clumps stating that the team’s batters would have to work hard to identify those incidences and adapt accordingly when facing an opposition that is bowling exceptionally. He added that the challenge is to continually learn and reflect on the performance as a team and individually.
