Road Carnages in South Africa

Despite continuous campaigns to stop road carnages, the death toll arising from car accidents continues to rise. Within the past ten years close to 135 000 people have perished because of road crashes.

Preliminary road fatality statistics for the past ten years suggest that the current road safety initiatives employed within the country are simply not effective. Going by 2017 statistics, South Africa saw 14 050 people perish in road crashes in 2017. Although this number was lower than that seen in 2016 (14 071), it is still higher than the car crash fatalities from 2008 through to 2015.

An Increased Number of Car Crash Fatalities

The released 2018/19 festive period road fatality data released by the Department of Transport show that a little over 1600 people perished on SA roads during this festive season. Although this number has been presented as a 7% decrease to last year’s data of the same time, Howard Dembovsky, the lead at Justice Project South Africa, challenged this stating that in the like-for-like data comparison there actually was a 2.5%.

The 2018 statistics were based on reports made between 1 December 2018 and 8 January 2019.
