Charlie Appleby Looking Forward To Triumph in the Dubai Sheema Classic
Horse racing has long been a lucrative gambling practice in various parts of the world. While the sport is only moderately favored in the US, horse racing is widespread in the Middle East. The Kentucky Derby is perhaps the most famous horse race in the United States and attracts thousands of celebrities every year. Other horse racing events, like Godolphin, which is well-known in the UAE, bring in millions of dollars and features some of the world’s most well-trained horses.
More about the New Godolphin Victory
Old Persian is one of the horses that are quickly becoming a Godolphin star. Old Persian won its first G1 victory in the Dubai Sheema Classic on Dubai World Cup night on March 30 in Meydan, UAE. The horse is a four-year-old Dubawi colt and won the 12-furlong turf competition. Old Persian earned his trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick with a winning treble during the Sheema Classic, which is the most expensive race day in the world.
Old Persian made a seasonal debut in the race and raced the same distance and course in the March 9th G2 Dubai City of Gold. March 9th is also referred to as Super Sunday. The horse came close to the leading colts in the race and placed fourth of the eight horses. Old Persian moved to third place with five furlongs to run and was angled out by William Buick at the top of the straight to deliver his challenge.
More on the Race
Old Persian quickened his speed at a consistent rate to get to the front with a furlong and a half to race. Soon, he had an advantage over the other horses and had significant room in the front to see off the late challenges of Cheval Grand and Suave Richard by a length and a half and a half-length in 2m 27.17s on good turf. The first three horses finished well before the others.
Concerning the race, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed stated “Every one of Godolphin’s winners tonight have made me happy, but we are winner with this gathering tonight. To bring everybody together – the horses, the owners and the trainers from around the world. We are trying to find more horses now. Our winners tonight are well-known, but we are trying to find the new horses now.”
His Highness also spoke about the trainers that were responsible for preparing the horses for Godolphin. He shared: “Charlie Appleby has been with me for a long time, and I am very happy with him – he listens. You have to give people you experience and tell them what to do. He is doing a very good job.”
Charlie Appleby was happy to hear that His Highness was so delighted with the work he had done. Appleby asserted: “I was pleased with the way the field went a good sensible gallon this evening. Turning for home, William made a very decisive move to make sure he got his gap, which allowed himself to get the run that he needed.”
Appleby also shared that once William got his gap, he was confident that Old Persian would display the same acceleration the horse exhibited in the Dubai City of Gold. Appleby added that William was a “typical Dubawi in that he has shown the progression from three to four.”
The skilled horse trainer expressed that he was thrilled with the Godolphin results overall. Appleby commented that he was glad High Highness Sheikh Mohammed was pleased with the results as well. Appleby said: “He [His Highness] has given us all the confidence in the world to allow us to what we need to and hopefully the results are showing. Just to be here is very special and very enjoyable.”
William Buick also commented concerning Old Persian, stating: “I am in a very privileged position and all four of my Dubai Sheema Classic winners have been fantastically good horses. Each of them means something special to me…we had a good position in this race…it was a tactical thing, but Old Persian has so much pace…he has gone from strength to strength and had really confirmed his win in the City of Gold. He is a lovely horse to look forward to as well.”
