Bahrain Practice Dominated by Ferrari
Ferrari seems to be back on form again. It proved that after taking center stage at the Friday practice of the Bahrain Grand Prix. However, things were not the same for the Italian team at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. It still managed to finish almost a minute right behind Valtteri Bottas’ Mercedes that won the race.
Friday’s Second Practice
In the Friday second practice, things seem to go so well for Sebastian Vettel, who appeared right ahead of Charles Leclerc in a 1-2 win. Vettel managed to win the race 0.603 seconds rights ahead of the champion Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes. In the first session, Leclerc managed to top from Vettel, almost a second up on Valtteri Bottas.
The Ferraris Are a Bit Faster
According to Hamilton, the Ferraris has been a bit faster this time from the get-go point. According to the international champion, this is entirely different from what happened in Melbourne’s game. He, however, acknowledges that the struggle will not be easy, especially as they get to qualify. Mattia Binotto fully supported the sentiments by Hamilton. Mattia Binotto is Ferrari’s team principal. He admitted that he even felt that the Friday results were a bit misleading. Although they might have faced certain problems while in Australia, Binotto noted that the team is progressing on well.
Later on, something unusual took place. Ferrari did a second qualifying simulation run while on their second practice. It saw the two key players; Leclerc and Vettel marginally improve over the initial lap. Vettel was able to extend his advantage over Lewis Hamilton by 0.1 seconds. Leclerc, who in the first run was 0.141 seconds slower than Vettel, lowered the gap to his mate to only 0.035 seconds.
Ferrari’s Sakhir Performance
On the first day of the weekend, Ferrari got an opportunity to perform at the Sakhir circuit. This performance was more like what the fans expected of them in their Australian games. They had earlier on done so well in the pre-season testing.
Mercedes strongly believed they could as much as 0.5 seconds a lap slower than their main rivals, Ferrari did. However, this did not happen as they dominated the season’s opening weekend while Ferrari underwent specific struggles. In Bahrain, the red cars have been so fast from the off. At that early stage, it is usually hard to predict the real form and the team to beat.
The Turn-Two Events
At Turn Two, something unfortunate occurred. Vettel had a spin and lost control of the Ferrari that was under power. On the other hand, Red Bull exhibited an unusually slow speed throughout the game. They were just on a one-lap pace, which was unusual.
The 6th Quickest
Max Verstappen also had his time to shine at the tournament. Apart from being the 6th fastest, he appeared 0.783 seconds off Vettel. Another teammate, Pierre Gasly looked at position 13th with 0.862 seconds further back.
Nico Hulkenberg was a tremendous 5th fastest for Renault. It managed to beat the Honda-powered Redbull that was controlled by Max Verstappen by slightly less than one second. In the afternoon, the 21-year old Dutchman appeared at the fifth position. In Australia, Hulkenberg began the partnership of Red Bull and Honda with the third place. The seventh fastest was Kevin Magnussen. He appeared right ahead of Landoo Norris, the McLaren’s British rookie, and Romain Grosjean, Hass teammate. Daniil Kvayat, Russian, rounded out the leading ten for Toro Rosso.
Williams at the Timesheet’s Bottom, Again
Former world champion, Willams appeared at the bottom of the timesheet once again. George Rusell managed to appear at the 19th position, 3 seconds off the average pace. He was however ahead of the Robert Kubica, the Polish teammate.
