Las Vegas Survival Guide
There may be other places to travel and have a good time. But, no place on Earth can give you the crazy, hedonistic fun like a visit to Las Vegas can. There is a reason it’s called Sin City after all. The adage is that if you want something, anything, you can get it in Vegas. Many people love the town and make an annual visit there. Other people visit one time, find themselves overwhelmed, and end up hating it. Perhaps, it was because they ate too much, gambled too much, and lost too much money in the casinos. Don’t worry. With our helpful guide, you will be able to sample the best of Las Vegas. And, maybe you’ll return home as a winner.
First, Find a Hotel That Suits Your Needs
Vegas has a nearly limitless choice of hotels. That is great because it allows you to choose from high-end casinos to the kitschy (some would say tacky) casinos. Before you book a hotel, you must keep your needs and desires in mind. For example, think about what you would like to see when you are in Vegas. Are you more of a nature person? Do you want to see the stars, and don’t mind staying someplace with fewer amenities for some peace and quiet? Do you want all the glitz and glamour the Strip has to offer? Are you on a budget trip or a budget-breaking trip?
There are many different types of hotels available for you to choose from. First, there are high-end casino hotels, which lavishly cater to any need you might have. These casinos have high-end luxury shops, restaurants, and amenities, with sweeping suites and a magnificent view of the city. But, these casinos come at a high price and may be too much for you and your budget. Other hotels are a little kitschy, such as the Luxor and New York, New York. These are nice hotels at a budget-friendly price. There are also modern hotels as well, with simple but chic rooms made up for the glitz and gold of the Vegas biggies. Be sure that you find a hotel that suits your budget.
Take a Break from the Vegas Strip
There are lots of things to do in Las Vegas off the Strip. It is hard to escape the Strip because that is where most of the casinos and attractions are. However, you should get outside the Strip at least once. And, there are a lot of attractions off-Strip. There are two off-Strip casinos, such as the Rio and Hard Rock, that offer exclusive concerts. There is also Fremont Street downtown, which has some interesting casino features and an indoor zip line.
So, you’ve been in Vegas for a couple of days, and find yourself tiring of the casinos and bright lights. Why not get out for a day and go see something else? There are amazing landscapes just outside of Vegas that are breathtaking. They will give you some relief from the sights and sounds and overwhelming electricity/neon of Vegas. For example, you can take a day tour right from your hotel to the Hoover Dam. You should definitely check out this man-made wonder. Other day tours include Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire State Park, and the Skywalk on the Grand Canyon’s West Rim (if you dare). There are other sights close to Vegas where you can stay and spend the night. It would be a shame to be this close to the Grand Canyon and not see it. You should also not miss Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. You’ll come back refreshed and ready to hit the tables.
When to Blow Your Budget and When to Save Your Budget
In Vegas, there are times when you should indulge — after all, that’s what vacations are for. There are also times when you should hold on to your money. First, you should at least do one of the huge buffets Vegas casinos are famous for. There is a buffet to fit your every taste if you do a little research. Some buffets offer the traditional surf and turf, and other buffets have Asian cuisine. There are also breakfast buffets with made-to-order pancakes and omelets. The buffets are not cheap, however. But, if you play your cards right, you can fill your belly and still do things during the day. Note: if you are a buffet lover, you may want to check out the buffet of legend. Caesars Palace has a buffet that you should not miss.
Vegas Encourages Night Owls
If you are a morning person who goes to bed not long after sunset, Vegas may not be for you. The city never truly goes to bed. Part of that is on purpose. Casinos excel at making sure you have no concept of time. The other reason is there are so many things to do and only so much time to do them in. In addition, Vegas has two really serious scenes that draw you in morning and night. The shows Vegas offers are nothing short of amazing. Some of the bars are also worth a look even if you are not a drinker. There are also pools in the area that are a nonstop party sport, both during the day and at night.
Celebrate the Weird
Many people say that Las Vegas is an amusement park, and, in reality, it is. There are rides and attractions all over the city. Play golf in a Kiss-themed miniature golf park. Ride the roller coaster at the New York-New York casino to view an artificial Manhattan skyline. The Venetian has a second floor that is, in reality, a magical gondola ride. Volcanoes erupt on a daily basis and on schedule. You can also see hundreds of Elvis impersonators all over the city. The more you understand the weirdness of Las Vegas, the more you can appreciate it for what it is. It’s a one-of-kind city.
Vegas is also a great city that you can see better from above. Pay the money and take a helicopter tour of the city. If you don’t want to pay that much, go to the Stratosphere. It has an observation deck that allows you to look down on the Strip from the city’s tallest building. You can also get a good view from the Ferris wheel and add some pics to your vacation stories.
Set a Gambling Budget
One reason people don’t have a good time in Vegas is because they made a budget before they began gambling. And, then, they quickly blew all that budgeting out the window at the slot machines on their first night. That means that they spent the rest of the trip sulking with no money to spend. Before you go, figure out your daily gambling budget, and stick to it. If the money you budgeted for the first day runs out, you still have some money to do other things. That way, you can have a good time and gamble again the next day. You will also be able to go home with great stories and no regrets.
