South Africa looking to legalize online gambling

Legalizing online gambling in South Africa has been talked about for a while. The general aspiration of the country to legalize this situation for a couple of years adds a certain anxiety on the whole process.

Although gambling is still considered illegal in South Africa, (even if the service provider is located in another country), The Business Times reported that the proposal will be introduced to the National Assembly briefly. The Select Committee of National Provinces is currently reviewing the proposition, and it is they who will then pass it on to the National Assembly.

South Africans will keep on exposing themselves to risks while the gambling environment continues to be illegal. Once the situation is regularized, players will have the certainty that they are getting fair odds and that they will certainly get paid out for all of their winnings. Also, they will be able to play and gamble freely without breaking the law and therefore having the constant threat of having to pay a high fine or even go to jail.

Themba Marasha, the chief operations officer of the National Gambling Board says: “The new law will enable people to license Internet gambling, and South African citizens will be able to operate within a protected setting. Players involved in interactive gambling currently play at their own risk and there’s no regulatory environment to protect them.”
