Campers expect gambling holidays

Scott Mauger, superintendent of Belleplain State Forest in Cape May County, has become very unpopular these days. The reason is simple: he had to tell hundreds of arriving campers that the campground might close due to the state government shutdown.

Not only Belleplain, but also Bass River State Forest and Parvin State Park may close. People traveling from distant states will be affected by this decision. The first effects for gamblers occurred after the suspension of state lottery and horse racing. Although many tickets had already been bought in advance and drawings will continue, winners will not be validated until the government approves the budget.

Casinos in Atlantic City are suing the state, anticipating the probable shutdown. Fearing casinos might be already closed, many gamblers preferred to stay home. Because of this, gaming halls looked quieter than any other holiday weekend. Hands of blackjack, usually costing $25 dollars on Saturdays, were offered for only $5 dollars so as to attract as many gamblers as possible.
